BMW automatic gearbox programming

For many years, the software structure of BMW automatic gearboxes and the possibilities for non-factory calibration were practically unavailable to independent specialists.

Today we can offer software optimisation for BMW ZF6HP and ZF8HP automatic gearboxes used in more than 120 BMW models.

The BMW ZF6HP automatic gearbox, produced from 2000 to 2011 and in some applications until around 2013, was installed in a very wide range of BMW vehicles with only relatively small technical differences: from smaller 1 Series models to ///M and Alpina versions producing up to around 500 hp and 700 Nm.

BMW ZF8HP automatic gearbox

The main ZF6HP gearbox families used by BMW are essentially two: 6HP19 / 6HP21 and 6HP26 / 6HP28. A large part of the difference between models is software-related: slower and comfort-oriented behavior in many diesel models, and a completely different, faster and more aggressive calibration in powerful Alpina B3 / Alpina B5 models using the same gearbox family.

The BMW ZF8HP gearbox, produced from 2008 onwards, is an updated, faster and more efficient 8-speed automatic transmission. Compared with the older ZF6HP, shift time is shorter, and fuel consumption may be up to around 11% lower depending on vehicle type and operating conditions.

ZF8HP types used in BMW vehicles

8HP45 — rated around 450/500 Nm and used from 2011. In practice, depending on condition and calibration, it is often capable of handling around 550–580 Nm. Used in BMW 1 Series F20, 2 Series M235i F22, 3 Series F30, 5 Series F10/F11, X3 F25, X4 F26, X5 35i E70, X5 F15 and X6 F16.
8HP50 — rated around 500 Nm and used from 2014. Found in BMW 1 Series F20 LCI, 2 Series M240i F22, 3 Series F30 LCI, 5 Series F10 and 7 Series G11.
8HP51 — a newer third-generation 8HP version that became especially relevant in BMW G-series models. It is used with B48, B47, B58 engines and some mild-hybrid variants.
8HP70 — rated around 700 Nm, produced from 2009 and updated in 2011. Used in BMW 7 Series F01, X5 50i E70, 5 Series F10/F11, 3 Series 335d F30, Alpina B3 F30/F31 and Alpina B4 F32/F33.
8HP75 — rated around 750 Nm and used from 2014. Found in Alpina B5 G30/G31, 5 Series G30/G31/F90, X5M F85, X6M F86, 7 Series G11/G12, X5 F15 and X3 30d G01.
8HP76 — used in applications such as Alpina B7 G11/G12.
8HP95 — a separate high-torque 8HP version used in BMW models with very high torque output. One example is the BMW M760Li xDrive with the V12 N74 engine.
8HP100 and newer high-torque variants. In the latest high-performance and hybrid BMW models, the 8HP family continues to evolve. ZF has reached the fourth generation of the 8HP family, and the newer 8HP evo concept is focused on hybrid platforms and future electrified models. This logic applies to new high-output M / M Hybrid models such as BMW XM and the latest M5 generation, where the transmission is no longer simply a “standard 8HP75”. Higher-torque, electrification-ready 8HP variants are used, so the older 45 / 50 / 70 / 75 classification is no longer sufficient for these vehicles.

Available calibration levels: entry-level, sporty and performance-oriented — Stage 1, Stage 2 and Stage 3 (in some also Stage4).

Stage 1:

Optimised shift points in D mode for more responsive yet economical driving
Optimised shift strategy when driving uphill or downhill
Optimised gearbox behaviour during warm-up
Optimised torque converter lock-up in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears
Lower minimum RPM in M / manual mode
Torque limits adapted for increased engine output
Automatic downshift in M mode removed where appropriate
Actual gear display in D / S / M modes, for example D1, D2, D3 instead of only D

Stage 2:

Optimised shift points in D and S modes for more effective acceleration at partial and full throttle
Firmer and sportier upshifts in D / S / M modes
Faster paddle-shift response
Optimised shift strategy when driving uphill or downhill
Optimised gearbox behaviour during warm-up
Optimised torque converter lock-up in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears
Torque limits adapted for increased engine output
Automatic downshift in M mode removed where appropriate
Actual gear display in D / S / M modes, for example D1, D2, D3 instead of only D

Stage 3:

Optimised shift points in D and S modes for more effective acceleration at partial and full throttle
Sporty, race-style upshift behaviour with increased instantaneous torque transfer
Approximately 50% faster shift time in S / M modes
Approximately 25% faster shift time in D mode
Fully manual mode, disabling automatic upshift where required in M mode
Automatic rev-matching with the corresponding downshift sound in S / M modes
Faster paddle-shift response
Optimised shift strategy when driving uphill or downhill
Optimised gearbox behaviour during warm-up
Optimised torque converter lock-up in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gears
Torque limits further adapted for increased engine output
Automatic downshift in M mode removed where appropriate
Actual gear display in D / S / M modes, for example D1, D2, D3 instead of only D
